Thorsten Askervold

Thorsten is actually a member of the Everett Cascades Club but we claim him as one of our own as he often attends our practices a couple of times a week. He has just moved into the Midget class this year and is working on improving his skating technique, racing skills and endurance. Up to now, he has only competed in short track competitions but this season, he is going to participate in the U.S. National Age Class Long Track Championships as well.

Thorsten is a dedicated young skater with long term goals to compete at an elite level. He often competes in interclub short track ability competitions in the lower mainland of British Columbia and is usually skating against skaters much older and larger than he.

Clare Jeong

Clare moves into the Midget class this year and will be competing against Julia in National Events. Although she has only raced long track once (last season), that is her preference and she can hardly wait for the long track season to start.

That said, her short track technique is improving every week and she is now very close in speed to Julia, one of the club's fastest skaters. Clare works hard at every practice and tries to improve her technique. Her endurance is phenomenal and she tends to speed up with every lap. This will be a challenge to those competing against her. In just the past year, she has dropped her 500 m. time by over 7 seconds - from just under a minute to a 53 second time.

Clare loves to read and will almost always be found with a book in her hand when she is not skating, doing dryland or swimming. Speaking of which, she is also one of the state's best swimmers in her age class.

Isreal Kim

Isreal turned 14 on July 3, 2007, so starts the skating season as a Juvenile.  He is big for his age and has a lot of strength and power that he is working hard to harness into speed on the ice.  He is the fastest starter on our ice - out powering everyone to the first corner nearly every time. He worked his way into a National Championship in 2007 by doing sets of 1600 squats non-stop every day.

Isreal has interests besides skating, so is not a consistent participant in our practices but still does well.

David Lee

David Lee has the challenge of being the "coach's son".  David is an energetic, hard working 11 year old who tries his hardest at every practice (both on and off the ice).  He is interested in learning and always asks questions when he does not understand.  He has a tenacity and determination to win that will stand him in good stead over his skating career.

Last season, he was the strongest Pony skater in both Long Track and Short Track. This year, he is a first year Midget and will face the challenge of skating against the much larger 13 year olds.

Hanul Lee

Hanul is a 1st year Midget skater this season. This puts him in the same age class as David. Hanul has shown remarkable improvement this season and, in fact, in the space of just a week, went from skating 13.5 second laps to skating a lap in just under 12 seconds. Something in the technique just seemed to click with him and he was off. As a result, he has shown a remarkable improvement in his times this season. His biggest challenge will be improving his endurance for the longer races.

Seoul, a quiet young man (especially compared to his teammates), is focusing on technique and is also seeing improvement this season. He is getting close to becoming a member of the "under a minute club". He will compete at Long Track Nationals this year for the experience.

Stacey Michel

Stacey began in-line skating at Pattison's West and skating with the Puget Sound SSC in the late spring of 2002.  She attended the Top Blades Short Track Camp, the OTC Training Camp in Colorado and a Sue Ellis Camp in New Brunswick in the summer of 2003.  This summer, she spent some time training with the Southern California Speedskating Club and then two weeks at the Ellis Edge Camps in New Brunswick.  Her skating has improved rapidly over her first three seasons. This season, however, she has set her sights on the big track. Her goal for the season is to make the Junior Category 1 team in long track. To this end, she is anticipating taking part in the North American Long Track Championships to be held in Utah in late January and the U.S. Junior Championships to be held in Minneapolis.

Stacey is in her first year in the Junior A age class this year and she is working very hard both on and off the ice to build the strength and endurance that she will need to attain her goals.  Her long term goal to skate some national or maybe world records.  But she has her eyes set on the 2010 Olympics.  As Stacey says, "I know about everyone says that, but I’ll work my butt off until it happens."

As a short tracker, her strongest distance was her 1000 m. This may also prove to be true in long track - she is a strong middle distance racer. Although after finishing her first ever 3000 metre race, she was heard to say two things: "...I can't feel my butt any more..." and after a few minutes to recover: "I think I can be good at that distance. I like the feeling..."

When not skating, Stacey is a straight A student. This season, she is skating with the advanced development program at the Utah Oval while attending classes at the University of Utah. She has found this season to be a challenge - a different coach, new location, university classes - and over the past month has been fighting an infection that has kept her off the ice.

Skating Accomplishments:

- Finished 3rd overall in the Junior girls category at the 2006 National Age Class Long Track Championships in Roseville, MN. Missed 2nd place by just 1 point. Earned a gold medal in the 500 metre distance defeating a newly crowned member of the 2006 Junior National Long Track team.

Julia Nam

Julia is a 13 year old skater attending middle school in Issaquah.  Julia has a passion for the dramatic.  When asked what her ambition is, her response is to be "a superstar".

In the meantime, she is a superstar on the ice.  Although she has only been on short track ice since joining our club 3 years ago, she has had a long and successful career in long track speed skating in her native South Korea.

In her first season with our club, after spending only a few months getting used to short track skates, she participated in her first competition in Everett where she skated in one of the fastest divisions and posted quite good times.  She has skated in several national and North American competitions since then with very impressive results.  Her passion remains long track and she looks forward to starting the long track season in late December each year.

Kevin (Jung Woo) Nam

Kevin is one of the fastest Pony skaters in our club. He is a bundle of energy who loves to laugh.  He started skating along with his older sister when Chang Ho formed a beginner class in mid-2004 with membership largely drawn from his church community. Since that time, Kevin has honed his technique to become a strong short track skater.

Kevin started out on long track skates and this is still his preference.  Under Coach Lee's watchful eye, he is improving every day.

Edwin (Sewon) Park

Edwin is a quiet 13 year old who is in his 3rd year of skating with the club.  He had some experience in his native Korea on long track skates and made the transition to short track when his family moved to the Tacoma area.

His goal for this year is to skate in some competitions and to win some first place ribbons or medals.  He would like to set records for his age class. Like many of our skaters, he is looking forward to the start of the Long Track season.

Edwin continues to be one of our fastest runners - usually completing our block run (about 0.8 miles) in under 5 minutes.

Edwin is now in middle school where his favorite subject is math because he is good at math and he likes it.

Jan Zurcher

A transplant to the Seattle area from Northern Canada, Jan skated long track for two years as a Midget and Juvenile skater in Winnipeg, Manitoba.   While other interests drew her attention, she never lost her love for skating.  She moved to Grande Prairie, Alberta, in 1978, and within a couple of years was involved with coaching speed skaters for the bi-annual Alberta Winter Games.  She was instrumental in forming the Grande Prairie Speedskating Club in 1982 and coaching several skaters at Alberta Winter Games and the Arctic Winter Games from 1982 through to 1996.  She was the Director of Speedskating for the Canada Winter Games which Grande Prairie hosted in 1995.

After the Canada Winter Games and in order to improve her understanding of short track speedskating to provide better coaching to the skaters, Jan decided to go back to competitive skating.  Her first event was an ability meet in Edmonton, Alberta, early in the 1995-96 season at which she was easily out-skated by the 10 year olds.  Undaunted, she continued and entered her first National class competition - the North American Short Track Championships held in Red Deer in 1996 where she finished 5th.  Bitten by the competitive bug, she continued to enter competitions throughout Alberta.

In August, 1998, she injured her knee at a Short Track Training Summer Camp and later that year moved to Auburn, WA.  As a result of these two events, she was unable to get back on skates until well into the 1998-99 competition season.  After a year of getting back to speed on skates, she began competing in ability meets in the lower mainland of British Columbia throughout the 1999-2000 competition year and then began venturing into other competitions.

Since then, she has been involved with the Puget Sound Speedskating Club (formerly the Tacoma Speedskating Club), first as a skater, then when Pete Perron left to pursue other sports, as a coach.  For a period of time she shared coaching honours with Chang-Ho Lee but in the past year, has turned the coaching reins over to Coach Lee and is now participating as a skater.
